A WOWplace is Warm and Inviting

I recently visited a Chick-Fil-A restaurant and was quite surprised when I entered the dining room.  Here is what I saw – in a fast food restaurant!

The dining room was warm and inviting.

There were even fresh flowers (NOT silk!) on the tables!

And probably the biggest surprise was when I visited the rest rooms.  There was a small hallway outside of the rest room area, and it looked like something you would expect in an elegant hotel!

Elegance outside the rest rooms!

Needless to say, it was quite a pleasant surprise.  At every turn, I was delighted to find something I didn’t think anyone in a fast food restaurant would want to do – or even think of.

Even the rest rooms were elegant, with granite countertops, beautiful floors, and warm paint on the walls (but you won’t be surprised to hear I didn’t take any pictures in there!)

It really made me feel good to sit there and enjoy a snack, just because of the decor alone – which I’m sure would also make me feel better if I worked there, as well.

So, what do you do to surprise and delight your customers – and employees alike?

Proving Your Value Can Save Your Job!

training, prove your value, WOWplace

What value do you provide?

I just heard a great story from a friend and wanted to share the lessons learned, especially in this economy where we all need to prove our value and hold onto our jobs.

Many years ago, this friend (who is a corporate trainer) was in a company where two divisions merged, leaving the organization with two trainers.  This was about 30 years ago, when training was done with overhead projectors because PowerPoint and personal computers didn’t even exist.

At one point, an Executive Admin came to him with a stack of papers from which she wanted him to create overhead slides.  Turns out, it was a management presentation containing merger plans.  One slide was of particular interest to him because it contained the names of all the people being proposed for a layoff… and HIS name was on it!

Imagine his surprise!  But instead of getting upset or going to his boss, he capitalized on an opportunity to subtly let his value to the organization be known.  He ran into the CEO in the hallway, and knowing that he had trained two people in the previous year on some very specific skills who were excelling in their new positions, he asked the CEO how those two people were working out.  Of course, the CEO replied that he was extremely pleased with their performance, and he thanked the trainer for his excellent training of these individuals.

Lo and behold… when the final layoff list came out, his name was no longer on it!  By subtly and professionally ensuring that the right people recognized and remembered the value he provided, he was able to keep his name off that list and preserve his job.

So, what value do you add to your organization?  Do people know it?  Do they remember it?  Speak up – subtly and professionally – and ensure that everyone knows the unique and valuable services you provide… and you give yourself the chance to create the same WOW results for your organization and your career!

A WOWplace is a Healthy Place

WOWplace, geroux

Take care of yourself!

With cold and flu season firmly here, one of the ways to help turn your workplace into a WOWplace is to keep yourself healthy… and help your co-workers stay that way.

My husband and I have been traveling a lot for the past couple of weeks, and he picked up some kind of flu that bloomed and then turned into bronchial pneumonia in less than a week!  While we were at a hotel in Las Vegas, I was buying medicine at the hotel convenience store (at $3.00 a pill – YIKES!!) just to try to get him better quickly.

By the time we got back home, 3 days after the worst of it had come on, he was in the emergency room, getting X-rays, antibiotics, cough medicine, and the like.  We were lucky it hadn’t turned into a full-blown pneumonia, but it taught us a few lessons:

  1. While you don’t want to run to the doctor (or miss work) for every little sniffle, when something comes on suddenly, in flu season, and your body is weakened from travel or other stress, don’t wait to get it checked out.
  2. If you’re in a high risk category, and your doctor feels you could benefit from the flu shot, it might be a good idea.  My husband was planning to get his flu shot in a couple of weeks, when he went on his regular doctor visit… two weeks too late, as it turns out.
  3. If you’re coughing and sneezing, don’t go to work and spread it around.  The last thing your co-workers (or your company) need is to get sick as well.  Take those couple of days and take care of yourself, so you can recover quickly and get back to full health for yourself, and full productivity for your company.  Think about it:  if you’re feeling miserable, how much work are you really getting done, anyway?  And what’s the quality of the work?

It’s tempting for over-achievers (like many of us!) to “power through” these times, and that’s admirable if it’s possible to do it well, without putting yourself or others at risk.

But sometimes, it’s OK to just take care of yourself, so you can be at your best wherever you go!

Employee Collaboration & Engagement Can Be Improved With Social Technologies

Employee collaboration is a crucial element in creating a WOWplace. Many experts believe that employees’ tacit knowledge (knowledge that exists only in their minds, and not written or shared anywhere else) is a major source of competitive advantage in the 21st Century.  Getting employees to share their knowledge, ideas, and insights is crucial to engaging them, increasing their productivity, and developing new efficiencies within an organization.

Click on the video below to listen to one expert at McKinsey & Co. discuss how social technology can help employees collaborate more effectively.

Stress Relief From a Dog!

Part of being effective at work or at home means taking small, quick mental breaks during the day to alleviate stress and inject a little humor and enjoyment into your day.  Whether laughing with co-workers, laughing at yourself, getting a quick snack, or just enjoying a few minutes away from the problem at hand, taking  a break, especially one that includes laughter and fun, is a great stress reliever.

Take a few minutes and enjoy this dog’s helpful antics… and pass it along to someone else in need of a smile.  Enjoy!

Beauty Is All Around Us – Look For It!

Sometimes we can create a WOW in our lives just by watching something beautiful that reminds us of just how incredible the world around us is.  It inspires us, gives us hope, and reminds us that beauty is all around us if we just take a moment to look for it.  Enjoy!

Create an Impossible WOW

Even though we know it’s impossible to fly without support, I would have thought this type of illusion was also impossible… but apparently it’s not.  The lesson here is to believe in the power of the human spirit and in our ability to do more than we ever thought possible… and to strive to achieve the dream of being all that we can be.

Enjoy!

What to Do When You’re Being Disrespected

disrespect, respectWhat do you do when you’re being disrespected at work, at home, or in any other situation?  Whether it’s an occasional occurrence or a frequent one, it doesn’t feel good when it’s happening and it’s tough to keep your emotions under control when you’re under attack.

However, please keep this in mind, especially if you’re the target of frequent disrespect from the same person: If someone has a habit of disrespecting you, they probably do it to others, too. While there are times when you need to (respectfully) stand up for yourself or someone else, people recognize bad behavior in others, so don’t feel foolish or weak if you let a few snipes just roll off your back without responding to them or lowering yourself to that level.

For example, I was once completely disrespected while presiding over a board meeting. One of my board members disagreed with what I planned to do to fix a certain situation, actually making faces and gestures to demonstrate what a total idiot that person perceived me to be, causing extreme discomfort for the rest of the board in the process. Not wanting to disrupt the board any more than necessary by engaging that person at that time, I simply reiterated my plan, and went on to the next item, rather than cause a scene by “defending myself.”

After the meeting, I began doubting myself and second-guessing my decision not to say anything, wondering how I could have handled the situation so “badly”, when one Board Member came up to me and said, “Wow, [that person] took condescension to a new low today, but you took professionalism to a new high.” Her comment really showed me that people recognized who was behaving badly, and who wasn’t, and that she (and the entire board) were grateful not to have had the situation devolve into sniping and fighting at the meeting. What an eye-opener that was…

Remembering this situation helps me keep my emotions and actions in check and the goal in mind; it also helps prevent me from saying or doing something I may regret and that may actually keep me from achieving those goals. I know it’s difficult to do “in the moment”, but I also know that whenever I let someone get to me so badly that they cause me to behave in a manner that does not reflect who I really am, I walk away feeling worse… not about them, but about myself.

And if given a choice, I would always rather walk away wishing I could have succeeded in inspiring someone else to behave better than feeling regret over not having succeeded in keeping myself from behaving badly.

WOW Creativity: Radio Flyer “Car” Turns Heads!

This video helps us remember that adding a little fun to everything we do makes a WOW impression on everyone around us, whether we’re at home, work, or play.  I hope it brightens your day to see how this couple paid tribute to her dad by turning his pickup truck into a Radio Flyer “little red wagon” that’s street-legal and lots of fun for them to drive… and for everyone around them to see!

Enjoy – and I hope you’re planning a little time to kick back and relax this summer.
